What is egg donation?

Egg donation is a form of fertility treatment in which a donor anonymously gives her eggs to an infertile woman to help her create a family of her own.

Why do some women need donor eggs?

There are many reasons why a woman may need to use donor eggs to have a baby. For the majority, this is due to maternal age. There are some unfortunate women who suffer from early menopause or who cannot use their eggs due to illness.

All women are born with 1–2 million potential eggs (in the form of ovarian follicles) which slowly run out over time until the menopause.

Who can apply?

Egg donors need to meet the following criteria set out by the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) and London Egg Bank:

Accepted
  • Between 18-35 years of age
  • A non-smoker
  • Healthy with a BMI between 18-30
  • An ovarian reserve within the normal range
  • Both ovaries intact
Not Accepted
  • Personal or family history of inheritable diseases
  • Untreated polycystic ovarian disease
