FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions for patients travelling from the United States
Why do US patients consider donor egg IVF in the UK?
For US patients considering treatment abroad, London offers a combination of specialist fertility care, strong regulation, convenience and value. The UK is an English-speaking destination with a healthcare system familiar to many American patients, and London is one of the world’s leading centres for specialist private healthcare. Fertility treatment is regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), with clear requirements around donor screening, consent, traceability and patient care. London is also well connected to major US cities, and many of our American patients already visit the UK for work, holidays or to see friends and family. Treatment can therefore often be incorporated into a relatively short stay. The cost of donor egg treatment in the UK may also be significantly lower than private donor egg treatment in the United States, depending on the treatment pathway chosen.
How many times will I need to travel to London for donor egg IVF?
Most US patients only need to travel to London for one or two short visits, depending on their treatment plan.
Initial consultations can be completed online, while blood tests, investigations and monitoring scans can usually be arranged in the United States. Your treatment coordinator will confirm your schedule before treatment begins so you can plan your travel in advance.
How quickly can I start donor egg IVF in the UK?
London Egg Bank has frozen donor eggs available for treatment, so there is no need to wait for a donor cycle to be synchronised with yours. Once you have completed your consultation and any required investigations and selected your donor, treatment can be planned around your circumstances and travel arrangements. Fresh donor egg treatment may also be available depending on your circumstances, preferences and donor availability.
Can I choose my own egg donor?
Yes. You can browse the London Egg Bank donor database online from the United States and choose from the donor profiles currently available. Profiles include non-identifying information such as physical characteristics, ethnic and family background, medical history, interests and personality. Our matching team can also help you identify suitable donors if particular characteristics are important to you.
Who are London Egg Bank's egg donors?
Our egg are recruited in the UK and undergo our donor recruitment and screening process in one of our clinics. They come from a wide range of backgrounds, but what they have in common is that they have chosen to donate because they want to help others. Egg donation in the UK is altruistic, and donors receive only the compensation permitted within the UK system for the time, inconvenience and expenses involved in the process.
All of our donors understand that children born from their donation can request identifying information about them once they reach the age of 18.
For many donors, this is part of why they feel comfortable with the UK system: it is based on openness, responsibility and respect for the future child. They choose to donate knowing exactly what that commitment means.
How does ID-release egg donation work in the UK?
All egg donors recruited by London Egg Bank are ID-release donors under UK law. Their identity remains confidential during your treatment and throughout the donor-conceived child’s childhood. From age 18, a donor-conceived person can apply to the HFEA for identifying information about their donor if they wish. This can include the donor’s name, date and place of birth and last known address. The donor does not have parental rights or financial responsibility for a child born as a result of the donation.
How is donor egg IVF regulated in the UK?
Donor egg IVF in the UK is regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). Licensed clinics must meet requirements covering donor screening and consent, laboratory practice, storage, treatment and traceability. The HFEA also maintains a national register of licensed fertility treatment and donation, providing long-term records relating to donors, recipients and donor-conceived people.
What donor egg IVF packages and guarantees are available?
London Egg Bank offers several donor egg IVF packages, including options with embryo guarantees and, for eligible patients, multi-cycle programmes with partial or full refund options. These packages can help US patients understand their potential treatment costs before travelling to the UK. Your coordinator and fertility doctor will explain the available options and advise which programmes you may be eligible for based on your individual circumstances.
Can embryos created in London be shipped to the United States?
In some circumstances, yes. Embryos can be created using donor eggs in London, frozen and subsequently transported to an appropriate fertility clinic in the United States. This depends on the receiving clinic’s requirements and the relevant regulatory and transport arrangements. Our team can discuss whether this is suitable for your treatment plan.
What happens after my embryo transfer when I return to the United States?
After your embryo transfer, pregnancy testing and early monitoring can usually take place in the United States. Our team will provide instructions about medication and when to take your pregnancy test. If blood tests or early pregnancy ultrasound scans are required, these can generally be arranged locally and the results shared with our clinical team in London. You therefore remain supported by London Egg Bank after leaving London rather than having to stay in the UK for early pregnancy monitoring.
Do US citizens need a visa to travel to the UK for fertility treatment?
US citizens can travel to the UK for private medical treatment under the UK’s visitor rules, provided they meet the relevant entry requirements.
For short visits, US travellers will normally need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling rather than a conventional visa. Entry requirements can change, so we recommend checking the latest UK Government guidance when planning your trip. Our team can provide documentation confirming your treatment arrangements if this is required for your journey.
